Horiticultural CounterPowers: Issue 1

Horticultural Counterpowers is a zine about how plants figure, symbolically and metaphorically, within Marxist concepts of urban space. It analyses urban realities, pasts, and futures, using the history and logic of agricultural systems as metaphors to help visualize material limitations and political possibilities that are normally obscured. A field guide, a reference, a map, a handbook, to the poetics and erotics of plant life in the city.

Madison Mayhew graduated from Emily Carr University of Art and Design’s Critical and Cultural Practices program, in which she focused on writing about socially engaged and pedagogical artworks. She currently leads several after-school art programs for elementary school students in East Vancouver, covering subjects such as running Marxist reading groups, and playing keyboards in a prog rock band.
